I am 26 years old and live in Hemel Hempstead. I will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon this weekend (8 October).
I currently work for Sense College @ Keech in Luton. I’m actually Scottish and have recently moved down here in April, I jumped at the opportunity of raising money for them.
My uncle has cerebral palsy and attends Sense Scotland up in Glasgow. I was lucky enough to get a job with Sense as a support worker in Luton.
The reason I chose to run and raise money for Sense is simply because we need the money in order to improve our service. We do so much for our students but there is so much more potential. We could use an extra bus or more sensory equipment. I don’t expect this just to be given to us, therefore I’m willing to put in the work and raise the funds in other ways.
When I saw there was a half marathon coming up I mentioned it to my boyfriend who was more than happy to get involved and raise money too. I then managed to talk my line manager and co-worker into joining. There’s now a strong four person team, all raising money for Sense and all directly linked to the charity.
All four of us runners have had our Sense running vests decorated by our very own students and will wear them proudly on the day. There is glitter, feathers, handprints and lots more on our vests, all to show the students and our co-workers are with us in spirit!
This is a first for all of us. I’ve never done anything like this in my life. I’m super excited and nervous but loving the challenge. I’m training four times a week and trying to follow the training plan sent each week by the Sense events team. All I can do is try. If I finish the half marathon in less than two and a half hours, I will be ecstatic, that is my aim. In fact, as someone who has never been a runner, finishing the race would do!
